Aims & Objectives of SHIELD project
The aim:
SHIELD aims to highlight, particularly to school students the issue of natural hazards and disasters (both geological and atmospheric) through the eye of science,
and
to unveil the new prospects that are created in predicting natural hazards and preventing and mitigating (making smaller) the impact of natural disasters, thanks to the contribution of scientific and technological developments in various fields of Science and Technology.
The Objectives:
- To trace the contribution of particular science fields to the development of technologies and methods that may affect prediction of natural hazards and mitigation of the impact of natural disasters.
- To demonstrate how the results of scientific research in different areas of science can have a major impact on the day - to - day lives of European citizens.
- To publicise and underline the necessity of fundamental research and at the same time increase scientists' awareness of issues and subjects that are of concern to the public.
- To guide the general public over the truly challenging and wondrous, but at the same time often incomprehensible world of science through various applications of R&D.
- To explore the complementarity of different scientific fields and to demonstrate the interrelation among them in respect to the natural hazards.
- To manifest how an initial concept has to be carefully examined and tested (via different stages of research) and what ethical issues may be addressed before the final development / commercialisation.
- To bring young people closer to science
- To bring forward examples of successful inter-European and / or cross-border collaboration for the prevention and mitigation of natural hazards and disasters.
