| The School of Geology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (www.geo.auth.gr) was founded in 1973 when the School of Natural Sciences, already operating since 1943, was divided in two new Schools, namely the School of Geology and the School of Biology. The School of Geology belongs to the Faculty of Sciences of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki founded in 1925. The Laboratory of Geology, Petrology and Mineralogy as well as the Laboratory of Meteorology and Climatology started operating during the academic year 1928-29. |
| Its teaching staff elaborates many research projects usually in collaboration with different national and international institutions and organizations. The School of Geology is among the first ten schools of the Aristotle University concerning the total budget of its projects. Its teaching and research staff publishes annually numerous papers in international and national scientific journals. The School of Geology has successfully organized many international and national congresses and meetings. Today, the total number of undergraduate students studying in the School of Geology is approximately 1200. |
| The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki is the second largest University in Greece, host to 41 Departments covering the entire range of sciences. The role of Scientific Expert in the SHIELD project will be undertaken by the Laboratory of Geology and Paleontology (LGP) in the Department of Geology. The LGP is the oldest Geological Laboratory at AUTh, and its members have a strong research background in the broader area of Aegean, as well as abroad. The staff includes six Professors, two Assistant Professors, four researchers, three technicians and several PhD and MSc students. In respect to the SHIELD project specific objectives, LGP staff has experience in earthquake and volcanic hazard assessment, active fault studies, regional studies, basin modelling, etc. The participating persons have a long and strong experience in co-ordinating and participating in research and applied national and international projects during the past. Administrative support is provided by the Research Committee of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, an independent service provider. |
